Why Professor David Made Korea His Home 40 Years Ago
I've explored 84 out of 467 neighborhoods in Seoul, and the Welcome to My Dong series has been a huge success! I love diving into each neighborhood's history, uncovering hidden stories, and showing off the true charm of every corner of this amazing city.
I'm just a curious Dutchman wanting to learn all about Seoul, often picking up knowledge from other foreigners and Koreans who already know the city inside out. Some of them have even joined me as guests in my dong videos. Now, it's time to get to know these experts a bit better.
I'm planning a few special dong episodes to introduce you to some of our regular neighborhood guests. These folks are the real experts on Seoul, and I can't wait f...

North Korean's Reaction to My Bizarre Experiences in North Korea
It's been six years since my six-day trip to North Korea, and I often think back on the many odd things that happened. I’ve shared my experiences with my North Korean friends here in South Korea countless times, but I never filmed their reactions-until now. In this video, my friend Yuna, who defected from North Korea, reacts to my bizarre experiences there and sh...
Discovering all the Hidden Stories around Yongsan Station

In this video, I discover all the Hidden Stories around Yongsan Station in a neighborhood called Hangang-ro 1, 2, and 3-ga. This place has a strong train-touched history. Everything in and around is influenced and shaped by the railroad that goes back to the Japanese Colonial Times. We go from the famous Baekbin Railroad Crossing to a former Railroad Hospital, Yongsan Garrison, Amor Pacific, Yo...

A neighborhood that once was known for its red light district, Cheongnyangni ...
How Ikseon-dong became Korea’s First Grid-Street Hanok Village

Ikseon-dong has become a top tourist destination over the last few years. Most people have heard about this gorgeous little Hanok Village by now, but there’s more than the cute Hanok cafes, boutiques, and bakeries for which people line up. What you’re about to hear about Ikseon and nearby landmarks (Gyeongun-dong and Unni-dong) will surprise you and make it much more fun to come to the neighbor...
I Can Imagine Myself Living in Huam-dong
Seoul's Huam-dong neighborhood was indeed a gem sandwiched between Seoul Station and the hugely popular HBC neighborhood. From the sloop of Mt. Namsan, I walked down Huam's history lane. The neighborhood took off during Japanese colonial times when wealthy Japanese settled in the so-called stand-alone Culture Houses. With little to no development, different layers of housing types started to fo...

People think South Korea was a true democracy after the Korean war, it wasn't, not at all, they didn't gain true democracy until the 1990s, all that time in between was fascist dictators or military regimes that were backed by the US government, there's a reason why North Korea is told that South Korea is a desolate place with no freedoms, because in fact for a long time this was true. My aunt lived in Korea for a few years in the early 1980s, and she never talked about the politics really, but she would talk about how they weren't allowed to eat certain foods for fear of really bad food poisoning and how they water wasn't exactly clean, she really made it sound like South Korea was a 3rd world country, and in some ways it was, she left right before the student protests of the later 1980s, but she kinda hinted at them. I moved to Korea in 2015 right before Bak Geun-hye was impeached, and people would talk about how her dad was a dictator in the 1970s and was assassinated almost like it was no big deal, and I was just shocked, I learned more about what happened after the war in the several years that I lived there, and asked my aunt and she said she kept a lot of that stuff away from us because we were too young to understand. Professor David was there then when my aunt was living there, lol
